Tilting at 5G Towers: Rethinking Infrastructural Transition in 2020

چکیده

5G has the potential to expand horizons of digital inclusion by providing higher speeds, lower latency, and support for more devices on a given network. However, mis‐ disinformation about proliferated in recent years stands be persistent barrier adoption this generation wireless technologies. After rumours linking Covid‐19 emerged wake pandemic, isolated actors attempted disrupt infrastructure with perceived connection 5G. Media coverage these incidents inadvertently spread such claims, engendering lasting uncertainty Infrastructure scholars have long held maxim that “the normally invisible quality working becomes visible when it breaks” (Star, 1999, p. 482), but efforts interpret uptake struggled define technical difference makes describe diffused acts anti‐5G sentiment exploited its slippery symbolic associations. What broke make so visible? This article reassesses interference through lens literary metaphor derived from Miguel de Cervantes’ epic novel Don Quixote. Using Don’s famed joust windmills, I examine what development 2020 can tell us infrastructural transition. With reference Quixote’s tilt, contend disruptions illustrate conflicting imperatives exclusion underlying neoliberal schemes telecommunication development.

Grafted Rods: A Tilting Phase Transition

A tilting phase transition is predicted for systems comprising rod like molecules which are irreversibly grafted to a flat surface, so that the non interacting rods are perpendicularly oriented. The transition is controlled by the grafting density ρ. It occurs as ρ increases as a result of the interplay between two energies. Tilt is favoured by the van-der-Waals attraction between the rods. It ...

Rethinking the Generational Gap in Online News Use: An Infrastructural Perspective

Our study investigates the role of infrastructures in shaping online news usage by contrasting use patterns of two social groups—millennials and boomers—that are specifically located in news infrastructures. Typically based on self-reported data, popular press and academics tend to highlight the generational gap in news usage and link it to divergence in values and preferences of the two age co...

Tilting at Windmills FULL PRESENTATION

Harnessing wind energy is one of the pressing challenges of our time. The scale, complexity, and robustness of wind power systems present compelling cyber-physical system design issues. In response to these emerging challenges, Purdue has initiated strategic partnerships for infrastructure development. Working with the US Department of Energy, Purdue is developing physical infrastructure for an...
